Lighting
To choose the right size chandelier, add the dimensions of your room together (in feet) to get the ideal diameter of the chandelier in inches. For example, if your room is 12 feet by 14 feet, your chandelier should be about 26 inches in diameter. Make sure the chandelier is proportionate to the space and any furniture it will hang above.
Layered lighting involves combining different types of lighting—ambient, task, and accent—to create depth and dimension in a room. Start with ambient lighting as the base, add task lighting for functionality, and finish with accent lighting to highlight decor and architectural features.
Color temperature is measured in Kelvins (K) and affects the mood of a room. Warm white light (2700K-3000K) creates a cozy atmosphere, making it ideal for living rooms and bedrooms. Cool white light (3500K-4100K) is more energizing and works well in kitchens and bathrooms. Daylight (5000K-6500K) is very bright and mimics natural sunlight, which is great for reading or detailed work.
Yes, LED lights are more energy-efficient, longer-lasting, and environmentally friendly compared to traditional incandescent or fluorescent bulbs. They use less electricity and emit less heat, which can reduce cooling costs. Plus, they are available in a variety of brightness levels and color temperatures.
Smart lighting refers to lighting that can be controlled via a smartphone app, voice assistant, or automation system. You can adjust brightness, color, and scheduling remotely. Smart lighting is perfect for enhancing convenience, security, and energy efficiency in your home.
To reduce glare, use diffusers or shades to soften the light, opt for matte finishes on walls and furniture, and position lights so they do not directly reflect into your eyes. Also, consider dimmable lighting to adjust brightness levels according to your needs.
Yes, mixing different lighting styles can add character and interest to a room. Just be sure that the different fixtures complement each other in terms of scale, finish, and overall design aesthetic. For example, you can pair a modern floor lamp with a vintage chandelier as long as they share a common color scheme or material.
ETL-rated refers to a product that has been tested and certified by Intertek's Electrical Testing Laboratories (ETL) to meet specific safety standards. An ETL rating indicates that the product complies with North American safety standards for electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. It is similar to other safety certification marks, such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and CSA (Canadian Standards Association).
Kelvins (K) are a unit of measurement used to describe the color temperature of a light source, indicating the color appearance of the light emitted. In lighting, the color temperature determines whether a light appears warm (yellowish) or cool (bluish), and it's measured on a Kelvin scale.
Lumens are a unit of measurement used to quantify the amount of visible light emitted by a light source. In simple terms, lumens measure the brightness of a light. The higher the number of lumens, the brighter the light will appear.
An integrated LED is a lighting fixture where the LED (light-emitting diode) is built directly into the light fixture itself, rather than using a separate, replaceable bulb. In an integrated LED fixture, the LED chips, heat sink, and other necessary components are all part of the fixture's design, creating a seamless, all-in-one unit.
Decor
Start by selecting a base color that you love, then choose one or two complementary colors. Consider the mood you want to create: warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) evoke energy, while cool colors (blues, greens, purples) create a calming atmosphere. You can also add neutral tones to balance the palette and provide versatility.
In small spaces, prioritize functionality and flow. Use multi-functional furniture like storage ottomans or foldable tables. Arrange furniture to maximize floor space—consider floating pieces away from walls or using corner areas. Keep the scale of furniture appropriate to the size of the room and choose lighter colors to make the space feel larger.
A focal point draws the eye and anchors the room’s design. It could be a fireplace, a large piece of art, a statement piece of furniture, or a striking light fixture. Arrange your decor and furniture around this focal point to highlight it, using lighting, color, and symmetry to enhance its impact.
To quickly refresh a room, consider swapping out textiles like throw pillows, rugs, or curtains for new colors or patterns. Update wall art or add new decorative accessories like vases, sculptures, or candles. A fresh coat of paint or new lighting fixtures can also make a big difference in the look and feel of a space.
Start with a neutral base and layer in patterns of different scales—small, medium, and large. Stick to a consistent color palette to ensure harmony. Mix different types of patterns, like stripes with florals or geometrics with abstracts, but avoid using too many bold patterns together, which can overwhelm the space.
When displaying art and photographs, consider the scale of the wall and the size of the pieces. Hang art at eye level, and if you're creating a gallery wall, arrange pieces in a cohesive layout. Use frames that complement your decor, and consider using a mix of sizes and orientations to create visual interest.
For a minimalist style, focus on quality over quantity. Choose a few statement pieces that are functional and aesthetically pleasing. Stick to a neutral color palette with clean lines and avoid clutter. Every piece should have a purpose, and the overall look should feel open and airy.
In a rental space, focus on non-permanent decor changes. Use removable wallpaper or decals to add personality without damaging walls. Invest in versatile, movable furniture, and use area rugs to define spaces and add warmth. Incorporate decor like throw pillows, art, and lighting that reflect your style and can easily move with you.
Add seasonal touches with small decor items like pillows, throws, and table runners in seasonal colors or patterns. Switch out wall art or swap accessories like vases, candles, and decorative objects. You can also use seasonal flowers or plants to bring a fresh, festive look to your space.
To balance function and style, choose decor that is both beautiful and practical. For example, select stylish storage solutions, or opt for furniture with built-in storage. Use decor items that also serve a purpose, like decorative trays, baskets, or multi-functional furniture. Make sure that the flow of the room allows for easy movement and that your decor enhances, rather than detracts from, the room’s usability.
